WRINCH, DOROTHY

biologist (1894 - 1976)

Dorothy Wrinch was a British mathematician, biologist, and chemist apparently known for her sharp tongue. She advocated a theory of proteins in which amino acids were hooked together in chains (sequences) subsequently shown to be incorrect, although the sequence hypothesis was important in driving later research. There is a nice article about her in Women of Science Righting the Record ed. Kass-Simon and P. Farnes, Indiana University Press,1993. The online encyclopaedia Wikipedia has an excellent description of her life and work.
