The elliptical galaxy Messier 84 (NGC 4374) in Virgo, shown in an R-band CCD image obtained with the UA 16-inch telescope. The field of view shown is 11.1 arcminutes wide. This galaxy lies at the western end of Markarian's Chain, which continues to the east-northeast through M86 and the NGC 4435/8 high-speed interacting pair. The small elongated galaxy seen to the lower left here is NGC 4387.
