Topics for Panel Discussion, on Friday, June 2:
- 1. Do SB's suggest that spiral galaxies evolve faster than thought
earlier? What are the constraints on the evolution time-scale of
SB's? What is the most natural sense of spiral evolution?
- 2. Are there attractors in the bar morphology?
- 3. Can bars be recurrent?
- 4. How can we detect edge-on bars?
- 5. Where are the resonances in nonringed barred spirals?
- 6. Do bars drive spiral structure?
- 7. What are the main objectives for future observational and theoretical
studies of SB's?
- 8. Why do nuclear and outer rings co-exist in some galaxies when the
time-scale for their formation differs by a factor of 100?
- 9. How far do bars extend?
- 10. How many different patterns can exist in the same galaxy?
- 11. Are there stable inclined gas orbits in a barred potential
(theoretical and observational evidence)?
- 12. Do we understand the gas dynamics: how viscous is the gas,
what is the time-scale for dissipation and angular momentum
transfer? Why are results from various gas simulations so
different?
- - other topics can be suggested
The format of this discussion is such that members of the SOC or others
with an opinion on the matters can argue briefly about a given topic
and open it for discussion from the general audience.
Special Evening Events:
Tuesday: Reception at Natural History Museum (Smith Hall)
University of Alabama Campus 7:00 pm--8:30pm. Finger Food Buffet plus
wine and non-alcoholic drinks.
The Museum is within walking distance of Sheraton Hotel. Local
students and faculty will be walking over from the Sheraton lobby
starting about 6:45 pm. Find one of these and you can get a brief
"Forrest Gump" tour of the campus on the way or coming back.
In the museum itself, look for a unique astronomical artifact, the only
exhibition of meteorite which struck a human being when falling to
earth.
For those who may have difficulty walking (or in case of inclement
weather) a van will be leaving the Sheraton parking lot at 6:45 and
will be returning from the museum shortly after 8:00 pm. The van will
have a "Barred Galaxy Conference" sign.
Wednesday: Participants should make their own arrangements for supper
at Sheraton restaurant or other local restaurants. Check with Local
attendees for suggestions.
Thursday: Tour of Moundville State Park and BBQ supper. 5:00 pm until 7:30 pm.
Two large buses will be provide transport to Moundville which is about
30 minutes drive from Tuscaloosa. The buses will leave the Sheraton
parking lot about 4:20 pm. Miss the bus? A small van will leave
somewhat later but try to catch the bus since van space is very
limited.
Attractions at Moundville are the museum containing artifacts from what
was once one of the largest cities in the U.S., a large Temple Mound
with reconstructed ceremonial "observatory" on top and a reconstruction
of typical houses. There is a nature trail for those interested.
Informal clothing will be helpful, particularly for the nature trail and
climbing the temple mound staircase.
The BBQ will be held in the rustic conference center. Vegetarians,
never fear, there will be adequate sustenence for you including
vegetarian BBQ beans.
In the even of bad weather, the activities will be restricted to the
museum and the conference center which can seat everybody for the BBQ.
A call for bus departure will be made at 7:30 pm. for return to Sheraton.
One warning: watch out for and do not touch fire ant mounds! They are
another new immigrant which like Kudzu is conquering the U.S. Their name
is wholly justified.
Friday: Banquet in a genuine antebellum mansion, "The University
Club." This was once the governor's mansion when Tuscaloosa was the
state capital. It is now the faculty club where faculty and guests
can dine.
6:00--7:00 pm Cash bar reception in the University Club.
7:00--8:00 pm Banquet, Again, a variety of vegetable dishes will be available. Meat entree will be chicken cordon bleu.
There will be two departure times for the bus from the Sheraton Hotel:
5:50 pm and 6:15 pm. First call for bus departure back to the Sheraton
will be at 8:00 pm. If necessary, another departure will be scheduled
at 8:30 p.m.
