UA Astronomy Research Facilities

The astronomy group has very complete resources for conducting astronomical research. We have a network of twelve Sun Sparc workstations (consisting of a variety of IPC (3), IPX (2), LX (2), SS10-51 (1), SS20-51 (1), 5 (1), 1+ (1), and 3/60 (1; used as x-terminal)) and three Silicon Graphics Indigo workstations Other equipment includes 1/2 tape drive, 8mm Exabyte drives (both 2GB and 5GB), 4mm DAT drives, and many CDrom drives. We also have a fully networked system of 600 DPI laser printers and a Tektronix color printer. The disk storage space shared by various machines within the astronomy group totals approximately 13 GBytes at this time.

We have an excellent collection of sky survey charts. These include the the Palomar I and II surveys, SRC-J southern and equatorial surveys, the ESO-R southern survey and the CD-ROM digitized sky survey from the Space Telescope Guide Star Catalog project.

Also available at no cost via the network are the IBM 3090 Model 400E campus computer and the Alabama State Supercomputer network Cray X-MP/216 (soon to be upgraded to a Cray C-90).

We also have fully equipped electronics and machine shops in our building.
