SYLLABUS

Text: (recommended) Bennett et al. "The Essential Cosmic Perspective" (4th ed.)
Clickers: (recommended) Classroom Performance System response pad (clicker) - at SupeStore
clicker: $20/15 new/used ... then register online at www.einstruction.com
registration: $10/semester w/credit/debit card or $16 for code from SupeStore
Exams: Four multiple choice exams: three during term, plus a Final
Final Exam: an exam (4th) over the last material covered since the 3rd exam
Grading: The four exam scores contribute equally toward 100% of the final grade.
Makeups: There are no makeup exams unless you have a good, documented excuse for missing
an exam -- then a (5th) comprehensive exam can be taken during the final to substitute
Attendance: Class participation (using clickers) contributes up to 10% extra credit.
Extra credit: Correct responses to in-class clicker questions generate extra credit of up to 10%
Prereq: This course has no prerequisites.
Objectives: to survey the contents of the Universe, their workings and evolution (see below)
Note: AY 102 (Astronomy Lab) must also be taken (at some time) for AY 101
to count towards the Natural Science portion of the Core Curriculum.
